Manual lymphatic drainage
What is manual lymphatic drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a proven form of physiotherapy for the treatment of oedema, bruising and water retention. It supports the body in removing accumulated lymphatic fluid in a targeted manner, thereby alleviating swelling and discomfort.
Our specially trained therapists use gentle, circular movements with light pressure to guide the lymph into the vascular system. For more severe edema, additional bandages or support stockings may be recommended.
Important: We bill the compulsory health insurance, but are not recognized by supplementary insurances. A doctor's prescription is required.
Manual lymphatic drainage
Indications: When is MLD useful?
Manual lymphatic drainage can be helpful for various complaints:
1. lymphoedema
- Excellent lymphedema: Congenital weakness of the lymphatic system, often in women.
- Secondary lymphedema: As a result of operations, radiation (e.g. after breast cancer), injuries or severe obesity.
2. after operations or accidents
After surgical procedures or injuries, MLD helps to reduce swelling and support wound healing. If necessary, lymphatic tape can further relieve the pressure.
3. headaches and trigeminal neuralgia
MLD can relieve tension headaches and trigeminal neuralgia using gentle drainage techniques in the neck and head area. Trigger point therapy can also be used.
4. pregnancy
Many expectant mothers suffer from swollen legs. MLD can help to reduce swelling and prevent the development of varicose veins. However, medical clarification is necessary.
How does manual lymphatic drainage work?
The lymphatic system plays a central role in the body's fluid regulation. Normally, around 90 % of fluid is transported away via the venous system, while the remaining 10 % is removed via the lymphatic system. If this is disrupted, fluid accumulates in the tissue, causing swelling and restricted movement.
The lymph flow is stimulated with targeted grip techniques (twisting, pushing, pumping and circular movements) so that the excess tissue fluid is better transported back to the heart. This leads to a reduction in pressure in the tissue and noticeable pain relief.
After the treatment:
- Immediate bandaging or compression stockings prevent renewed swelling.
- An increased urge to urinate is normal and indicates the successful removal of lymph.
- Drinking plenty of water supports the detoxification process.
When should MLD not be used?
Manual lymphatic drainage is not recommended in every case. There are relative and absolute Contraindications:
Relative contraindications (consultation with the doctor required):
- Chronic inflammation
- Low blood pressure
- Compensated heart failure
- Thyroid diseases
- Bronchial asthma
- Certain skin diseases
Absolute contraindications (MLD is not permitted):
- Boesian tumors
- Acute inflammation or fever
- Acute deep vein thrombosis
- Decompensated heart failure
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Open skin wounds in the treatment area
