Dry Needling Side Effects: Anyone who hears about needle therapy for the first time is understandably wondering what might happen. The short answer: Dry Needling is a safe method when used correctly by trained physiotherapists. Most reactions are mild, temporary, and a sign that the muscle is responding to the treatment. In our clinic in Zurich Wipkingen, we will discuss with you before each treatment whether Dry Needling is suitable for you and explain what you can expect.
What side effects are normal after Dry Needling?
In dry needling, a thin, sterile needle is inserted directly into a hardened muscle point, the so-called trigger point. The muscle often reacts to this with a brief twitch. This exact reaction is desired, but it can leave traces. Typical reactions include:
- Muscle cramp feeling: The treated area feels numb and heavy for one to two days, similar to what you feel after an intense workout.
- Small blood blister: If the needle hits a fine blood vessel, a small bruise appears. It disappears on its own.
- Mild redness or pressure sensitivity around the injection site.
- Fatigue or feeling of heaviness on the day of treatment. Some patients also report a pleasant feeling of relaxation.
- Short sense of circulation: Rarely does anyone become dizzy or lightheaded during treatment. Therefore, we treat you lying down and monitor you during the session.
These reactions are not cause for concern. They usually subside within 24 to 48 hours. The actual effect, i.e., less tension and more mobility, often does not become apparent until the muscle soreness subsides.
Rare risks and how to avoid them
Serious complications are very rare with proper use. These include infections at the injection site or, in treatments in the chest area, an injury to the lung tissue. Both of these can practically be ruled out by following good hygiene and a thorough knowledge of anatomy. Therefore, at Physio Waidfuss it is important to:
- We use exclusively sterile disposable needles.
- Dry needling is only performed by therapists with appropriate additional training.
- In the area of the shoulders, neck and back, we choose the direction of the needle and the length of the needle so that the lung cannot be reached.
- Before the first treatment, we will discuss your medical history and medications.
When is dry needling not suitable?
There are situations where we recommend not using the needle or that you first consult your doctor:
- In cases of blood clotting disorders or when taking blood-thinning medications (in this case, we decide on a case-by-case basis and work cautiously).
- In the case of an acute infection or skin injury in the treatment area.
- In areas with lymphoedema, for example in the arm after a breast operation.
- With a severely weakened immune system.
- In cases of severe needle fear. Then we work with manual Trigger point therapy, Mobilization and active exercises are also very effective.
- During pregnancy, we discuss the benefits and alternatives together.
What you can do yourself after the treatment
With a few simple measures, you can help your body process the treatment better:
- Drink plenty of water on the day of treatment.
- Move easily: a walk or light stretching exercises release residual tension faster than rest.
- Heat, such as a warm shower or a cherry pit pillow, relieves the feeling of muscle soreness.
- On the same day, avoid intense strength training of the treated muscle.
- Cooling the area in the first few hours helps with a bruise.
When should you see a doctor?
If the symptoms do not subside within two to three days after treatment, if the injection site becomes swollen, hot, or severely red, or if you notice shortness of breath or stabbing chest pain upon breathing after a treatment in the chest or shoulder area, please inform us or your doctor. These signs are rare, but should always be investigated.

Common questions about Dry Needling side effects
Does Dry Needling hurt?
The sting itself is barely noticeable. When the needle hits the trigger point, there is a brief twinge and a pulling sensation that many describe as «quite painful.» It only lasts a few seconds.
How long do the side effects last?
The feeling of muscle soreness and pressure sensitivity usually subside within one to two days. A small blood blister may remain visible for a little longer, but it is harmless.
Can I do sports after Dry Needling?
Light exercise is expressly recommended. It is better to postpone intense training of the treated muscles until the next day.
Is Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture?
No. In dry needling, the needle is targeted at a trigger point in the muscle; the basis is Western anatomy. Acupuncture works with meridians of traditional Chinese medicine.
